THE HANDS ACROSS MOUNTAINS PROJECT
"Sounds of streams and shapes of mountains.
The sounds never stop and the shapes never cease…
If you, who are valley streams and looming mountains,
can't throw some light on the nature of ridges and rivers, who can?"
-Dogen
In the famous words of John Muir, "the mountains are calling and I must go.” So I went...
In 2009 I traveled to Nepal to trek thru the Himalayas. I hiked the Annapurna Range of the Himalayas, and over the Thorung La Pass. At 18,000' and bordering Tibet, the Thorung La Pass is the highest pass in the world. While in Kathmandu, Nepal, I visited Ama Ghar, a children's home run by the non-profit Ama Foundation. The Ama Foundation is a grassroots US-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to providing the most underprivileged children of Nepal with a loving home, access to education, and the opportunity to live healthy and secure lives while becoming productive members within their community.
Now, four years later, I'm still in the mountains. Living in Yosemite and working for the National Park Service as a |
Biological Science Technician, I've exchanged colorful prayer flags for a grey & green uniform, and sherpas for GPS units. I still cross high lonesome passes, but now of granite instead of snow. My job brings me to study backcountry meadows, living in the Yosemite wilderness and backpacking for up to seven days at a time. In the summer of 2014 I’ll once again be exploring my backyard of the Sierras. I’m starting Hands Across Mountains to raise money for the Ama Foundation; and to connect people. I'll be documenting all of my hiking and backpacking trips throughout the Sierras, mile by mile. I'm asking for friends and family (and friends of friends) to pledge any amount of money per mile I hike over the summer, from April thru October.
|
I'll be documenting these miles and share each trip with you on the Hands Across Mountains Facebook page and the Follow My Trips page of this website. Last summer I hiked 300 miles throughout the Yosemite backcountry, and expect similar mileage this summer. I'll cap the maximum mileage at 300. My total mileage (up to 300 miles) along with your "per-mile" pledge will be used to calculate your summer-end donation. Additionally, you can make a standard, fixed donation. 100% of donations will go directly to the Ama Foundation to be used to provide for their 50+ children's education, school supplies, housing, and meals.

You can follow my trips on the Hands Across Mountains Facebook page. Please consider pledging a per-mile donation and following me throughout this coming summer. Hope to see you in the mountains!
